(1867-1950) Стимсон, Генри ЛьюисГосударственный деятель, дипломат, юрист. Получил образование в Йельском [ Yale University] и Гарвардском [ Harvard University] университетах. Ранняя карьера Стимсона связана с И. Рутом [ Root, Elihu]. В 1910 выдвигал кандидатуру на выборах губернатора штата Нью-Йорк. В 1911-13 военный министр [ Secretary of War] в администрации президента У. Тафта [ Taft, William Howard], во время первой мировой войны - полковник артиллерии. В 1928-29 генерал-губернатор Филиппин, сменил на этом посту Л. Вуда [ Wood, Leonard], несколько смягчив последствия его жесткой политики. В 1929-33 государственный секретарь США [ Secretary of State]. Возглавлял американскую делегацию на Лондонской конференции морских держав [London Naval Conference] (1930-31). Выступал против установления дипломатических отношений между США и СССР. Автор дипломатических нот, вошедших в историю как доктрина Стимсона [ Stimson Doctrine]. В 1940-45 вновь был военным министром. На этом посту был противником плана высадки союзников на юге Европы, выдвинутого У. Черчиллем, настаивал на форсировании пролива Ла-Манш. После войны предлагал поделиться с СССР секретом атомной бомбы и поставить ее под международный контроль.
